Drug seizure – Central Australia

Northern Territory Police have charged three men with drug offences following a targeted operation on the supply of illicit substances in the Central Australian region.

Detectives from Alice Springs Crime Investigation Branch and the Dog Operations Unit have been conducting proactive patrols of remote and urban roads.

Early on Monday morning a vehicle was apprehended after crossing the SA border into the NT. A search of the vehicle located 7.7kg of cannabis and 280g of methamphetamine. The three men were arrested for supplying a commercial amount of methamphetamine and cannabis.

A 39-year-old Alice Springs man and a 37-year-old man from South Australia have been remanded to appear in Alice Springs Local Court on 21 October 2021. A-24-year-old South Australian man has been remanded until 2 September 2021.

All three men were also issued with infringement notices for Contravening Public Health Orders after bypassing the Border Control Point. The passenger of another vehicle apprehended during the operation was issued with a drug infringement notice.

Detective Sergeant Michael Ordelman said, “The NT Police will continue to target and disrupt the supply of drugs to urban and remote locations. Drugs are not a victimless crime and Police will continue to work collaboratively with the community to minimise the harm caused by the supply of drugs.”

COVID-19 Incident Controller Acting Commander Sachin Sharma said, “Not only it is alleged that the group was involved in serious criminal activity, they have no regards to the Chief Health Officer Directions, placing the NT community at risk.”
