Labor has today tabled a petition in parliament supporting the establishment of a new saleyard on the North West Coast following the devastating closure of the historic Quoiba saleyards.
Shadow Minister for Primary Industries, Shane Broad, said only Labor has backed the passionate community to set up an independent sale yard on the North West coast.
“The closure of the historic Quoiba saleyard was a huge blow to the North West Coast and yet the Liberals stood by and did nothing,” Dr Broad said.
“While the government has failed to act, Labor has continued to support farmers, butchers and the wider livestock industry to take matters into their own hands.
“The petition calls on the Guy Barnett to keep the North West meat industry sustainable by supporting the establishment of a new community sale yard.
“Liberals members need to get on board, especially Leonie Hiscutt and Gavin Pearce who have been arguing for other options instead of listening to what the local livestock industry wants.
“The petition tabled today highlights the significant impacts the livestock industry is enduring – including financial costs, reduced market access for livestock producers, increased travel requirements, limited finished stock availability and a loss of social contact.
“Labor refuses to allow farmers to be let down by the Liberals and we will continue to support the local community as they put in place their own solution.”
