First look at Gepps Cross Barracks

SA Gov

For the first time, the Malinauskas Government has released an architect’s impression of the new barracks, which will include 32 significantly larger stables and an undercover arena.

The Gepps Cross barracks will also accommodate the Dog Operation Unit with a separate area for kennels and special training facilities.

A submission for the project is currently before the Public Works Committee.

The estimated cost of relocating the MOUs to Gepps Cross is $90 million which includes work to upgrade access roads off Grand Junction Road and Briens Road.

The move is expected to be complete by mid-2024. This will ensure the current site at Thebarton is vacated next year, allowing work to commence on the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital on track for completion in 2030-31.

Unlike the Thebarton site, which is more than 100 years old, the new facilities will provide a higher standard of accommodation and facilities for staff and animals, supporting the important work of SA police for decades to come.

Details are still being finalised for a city staging post for the Mounted Operations Unit, allowing SAPOL to maintain operational effectiveness in the CBD.

Final locations for the remaining SAPOL facilities currently housed at Thebarton are being finalised.

As put by Stephen Mullighan

The Malinauskas Government has been working closely with SA police to deliver a new, purpose built home for the police greys and dogs.

We are investing in better facilities to ensure our police have a modern workplace, in line with other jurisdictions, to better support them in keeping the community safe.

Unlike the current site, Gepps Cross will meet the needs of police for decades to come.

This is a vital step towards a new Women’s and Children’s Hospital and we are getting on with the job.
