Getting no-till cropping and livestock to work together

Agriculture Victoria is co-ordinating a workshop for farmers and advisors on effective and efficient stubble management while grazing livestock.

The ‘Managing Livestock and Stubble’ workshop will include presentations by Daniel Colbert from Westech Real Estate, Wimmera farmer Nick Pekin and Agriculture Victoria Veterinary Officer Cathy Bunter.

Agriculture Victoria Land Management Extension Officer Heather Drendel said the workshop included practical information on managing stubbles, maintaining ground cover and livestock nutrition.

“Daniel Colbert will discuss options to manage heavy stubble loads, which have been a challenge for many farmers in recent years,” she said.

Mr Colbert will provide advice on effective stubble management, including optimal stubble height at harvest, windrow burning, chaff rows and chaff lining and discuss the pros and cons of disc and tyne seeders for different soil types, and RealTime Kinematic autosteer.

Mr Colbert will lead a discussion on how farmers can manage herbicide resistant weeds and pests in heavy stubble loads, including mice, snails and slugs.

He will also provide details of summer and pre-emergent herbicide effectiveness with high stubble loads.

Nick Pekin will share his practical experience with no-till in a mixed sheep and cropping enterprise.

Agriculture Victoria Veterinary Officer Cathy Bunter will present information on nutrient requirements for sheep grazing on stubbles.
