‘Gone Fishing Day’ lures fishos online in 2020

The State’s biggest day on the fishing calendar is set to be transformed into a virtual fishing festival for 2020, Minister for Agriculture Adam Marshall has announced.

Mr Marshall said while Gone Fishing Day would still be celebrated out on the water this Sunday, 18 October, an array of livestreamed events is planned for tonight.

“Current COVID-19 restrictions mean we are unable to host the fantastic community festivities we usually hold for Gone Fishing Day, so tonight we’ll bring you virtual events ahead of the big day on Sunday,” Mr Marshall said.

“Big names in fishing circles and DPI experts will livestream presentations and demonstrations to social media, including popular ‘how to’ sessions, responsible fishing information, best practice for catch and release, fishing with kids and more.

“Last year, more than 20,000 people attended Gone Fishing Day events, and I would hate for them to miss out in 2020, and this unique virtual fishing festival will ensure that doesn’t happen.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re a novice or an experienced angler, tonight’s packed schedule of livestreamed events means that fishos can still head to their favourite spots and enjoy Gone Fishing Day with family and friends.”

Tonight’s festivities will be streamed on the DPI Facebook page from 7:00pm, and Mr Marshall said there would also be Gone Fishing Day photo competitions through the DPI Fisheries social media pages with great prizes on offer.

“Once COVID restrictions ease we can hold community events, but until then, we will make sure fishers can still enjoy their time out on the water,” Mr Marshall said.

“Make sure you tune into tonight’s tips, so that come Sunday you can be involved in the biggest day on the fishing community’s calendar, and hopefully land a big catch.”
