Across the globe, hundreds of millions of people take part in Plastic Free July to help end plastic waste.

Plastic Free July is recognised globally as an annual month of global action where individuals, businesses and governments come together to take action to reduce plastic waste, creating a social change movement.

By sharing ideas, positive actions and stories of change, Plastic Free July helps people and organisations ‘choose to refuse’ single-use plastic every day.

Last year, an estimated 140 million people worldwide took part in Plastic Free July. On average, participants reduced their household waste and recycling by 15kg per person.

As part of ongoing efforts to reduce plastic waste and protect our environment, Goulburn Mulwaree Council is taking the Plastic Free July challenge to help our community take action to end plastic waste.

Goulburn Mulwaree Mayor Cr Peter Walker encouraged residents to rethink their use of plastics and to reduce waste.

“As momentum gathers around the impacts of single-use plastic on our environment and health, Plastic Free July is a perfect way to work on reducing plastic waste in our daily home and work lives,” Cr Walker said.

“I know the next generation is already learning the importance of reducing plastics use at schools through educational programs, and are becoming familiar with relying less and less on these single use plastics. I’m sure many of these kids are bringing this knowledge home to share with their parents, which is fantastic.”

To participate (for free), residents simply need to visit www.plasticfreejuly.org/take-the-challenge and choose to refuse one or more single-use plastics. There’s even a Pesky Plastics Quiz to help you find the right plastics to start your challenge.
