2022 Marks the 30th year of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence and Council is offering small grants for community projects to shine a spotlight on this year’s campaign.
The initiative aims to galvanise individuals, communities and organisations to address gender inequalities and eradicate violence against women and girls around the world.
The campaign begins each year on 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women), and concludes on 10 December (International Human Rights Day).
Nillumbik Mayor Frances Eyre said that Council is committed to preventing violence against women and promoting gender equality.
“This is an important issue that affects many people, and unfortunately, Nillumbik is not immune to it either,” Councillor Eyre said.
“In the year 2019-2020 there were 512 family violence incidents in our Shire, and intimate partner violence remains the greatest health risk factor for women aged 25-44. There is no excuse for any type of violence or disrespect, and we need to work together to call it out,” she said.
The grant funding can support – amongst a range of activities – community programs, events, public space activation to create unique, dynamic and inclusive local places, virtual events, arts and cultural initiatives.
In previous years, grants have supported a documentary screening, library activities, leisure facilities going orange, resources for schools and early years services which challenge gender and other stereotypes and teach respectful relationships
Grant applications are now open until Sunday 11 September 2022.
