Logan City Council’s commitment to the environment has been recognised on the world stage.
Green initiatives within the City of Logan earned a merit certificate and a highly commended recognition at the World Green City 2022 Awards, presented in South Korea.
Competition included entries from major cities including Paris, Montreal, Sao Paolo and Mexico City.
Council’s ‘Creating a Green City’ nomination was a finalist in the Living Green for Water category and as such won a Highly Commended certificate.
It showcased Council’s leadership in increasing the green canopy in one of the fastest growing cities in Australia, as well as growing environmental conservation partnerships with landowners across the city.
The nomination also highlighted an innovative localised tree planting program through environmental offsets along waterways and wildlife corridors.
Council’s ‘City of Logan Climate Change Resilience Strategy and Net Zero Commitment’ was among six entries identified by the judging panel that weren’t finalists but considered ‘particularly inspiring and innovative’ and worthy examples for other cities to follow.
It highlighted Council’s innovative wastewater solutions, such as Australia’s first bio-char facility at Loganholme Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The entry also spruiks Council’s innovative recycling initiatives and increased solar capacity, as Council strives to be carbon neutral by the end of this year.
Mayor Darren Power acknowledged the impressive international recognition at Council’s Ordinary Meeting today.
“These prestigious international awards are a credit to Council for its ongoing commitment to the environment,” he said.
“They are recognition of the achievement of Council staff involved in each of these initiatives, and their delivery wouldn’t be possible without the great collaboration across Council branches.
“Council’s efforts have also been strongly supported by City of Logan residents, who are passionate about protecting the environment for future generations to enjoy.”
