Last week, local artist BOHIE began painting a colourful mural on the hoarding along Crawford Street, aiming to bring a vibrant, community feel to the area in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Council was awarded a grant for the commission through the ‘NSW Partnerships: Local Councils Program’ which funds initiatives that support communities in their response to the pandemic.

BOHIE has worked on community murals for Council in the past, including the shipping container at the Moore Park Skate Park, and says she enjoys working with and for the community.

‘I’m a QPRC local so I’m really interested in placemaking in our area. The theme for this mural being a COVID response grant allowed me to pursue my themes of cultural healing and mental health.’

The mural’s design features the words ‘healing together’ and includes echinacea leaves — which are known for boosting the immune system. Complimented by a bright colour palette, the mural offers a visual representation of the community’s rich spirit and support for one another through the pandemic.

BOHIE said she hopes that the community ‘really feels the warmth and intentions for this artwork’ and believes it will help encourage an environment where people feel ‘welcome and connected’.

The mural is now complete and is a bright, colourful addition to the streetscape.
