Housing crisis just gets worse under Liberals

Tasmanian Labor

The latest housing dashboard shows yet another deterioration in Tasmania’s housing crisis, with more people waiting longer for housing, and a big drop in building approvals.

The number of families on the social housing waiting list has crossed the 4,500 mark, with the waiting time now up to 71.6 weeks.

That’s up from 21 weeks when the Liberals took office in 2014 – an increase of around a year.

Not only that, but the dashboard shows the government built just eight houses in September – missing its new homes target by 90 per cent – and the year-to-date building approvals are down by 1,000 compared to last year.

For a government that repeatedly claims it is building 10,000 homes in 10 years, these figures show just how off the mark they are and how out of touch they are on the needs of Tasmanians.

It is completely unacceptable that people in dire circumstances have to wait this long just to get a safe roof over their heads.

It is even more galling when the Housing Minister Guy Barnett tries to spin this crisis in his favour by endlessly claiming no government in history has done more on housing.

Tasmanians are tired of being told to ignore their own reality by a government that consistently ignores them and fails to deliver the basics they need to survive.
