HSBC SVNS rugby to bring party to Perth this weekend

  • HSBC SVNS to bring international teams to Perth for Australian-exclusive leg of global rugby event
  • Rugby tournament and festival takes place across three days at HBF Park
  • WA the only state in the country to host the global event over two years, alongside other cities including Hong Kong, Madrid and Los Angeles

The Australian-exclusive leg of the HSBC SVNS rugby tournament kicks off in Perth tomorrow, bringing a festival of fun to HBF Park over the long weekend, and again in January 2025.

Previously known as the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, HSBC SVNS attracts the world’s top rugby nations to play an alternative, fast-paced rugby union format which involves seven players competing in seven-minute halves in a tournament with round robin and knockout matches over three days.

The event prides itself on creating a party-like atmosphere, with the entertainment line-up including performances by Peking Duk, Hot Dub Time Machine, Discovery, Flewnt & Inkabee, and Perth favourites Coterie, as well as a premium food market and lively beach club, in addition to the world-class rugby matches.

Tickets starting at $35 are still available for all three days of action in the 2024 tournament, which is being hosted at the newly upgraded HBF Park.

The winning women’s and men’s teams will take home the SVNS Perth Trophy, which was designed by local Noongar artist Peter Farmer.

Each trophy is unique and incorporates important Noongar design elements inspired by hunting and gathering items, such as a coolamon and shield, which represent courage, co-operation, and identity.

Twelve men’s and twelve women’s national teams will go head-to-head in eight rounds of the championship, with Perth hosting round three of the tournament.

Other host cities include Cape Town, Dubai, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, Madrid, Singapore and Vancouver.

The tournament is expected to bring thousands of out-of-state rugby fans to WA, generating millions of dollars in visitor spend and providing a boost to local hospitality, accommodation, and tourism businesses.

HSBC SVNS will also be broadcast to a global audience, putting eyes across the world on WA as the State continues to grow its reputation for hosting international sporting events.

The sport has a strong following in many of WA’s key international inbound tourism markets including New Zealand, China, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States.

The HSBC SVNS is supported by the WA Government in partnership with World Rugby, Rugby Australia and RugbyWA.
