The Hunter Valley region’s latest accessible tourism experience is now taking bookings following a successful lift off this week.

The Hunter Valley Accessible Hot Air Balloon, a joint partnership between Cessnock City Council and Balloon Aloft, allows passengers who have previously been precluded from this activity the chance to experience the freedom of flight.

The accessible hot air balloon incorporates a unique seat and harnesses to ensure passengers with limited mobility are safe and secure during the flight, and is a first of its kind in NSW.

Cessnock City Council Mayor Jay Suvaal said the Hunter Valley attracts visitors from all parts of Australia and abroad.

“The Hunter Valley is among the State’s leading tourism destinations, and we are focussed on ensuring the unique sights and experiences that attract tourists to our region are available to everyone,” Clr Suvaal said.

“Hunter Valley Accessible Balloon Flights support people with disability or who are elderly or ill to enjoy a unique and fully accessible hot-air-ballooning experience with their family, friends and carers in our picturesque part of New South Wales.

“Our new accessible hot air balloon adds to the number of inclusive tourism experiences on offer in the Hunter Valley region.”

Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty said the balloon’s first official flight was a milestone moment for local accessibility and inclusion, which are critical components for responsible and sustainable tourism in the Hunter Valley.

“Planning and creating accessible tourism experiences like this one in the picturesque Hunter Valley has removed the barriers that prevented locals, families or visitors from enjoying the freedom of flight and will also help the local tourism industry become more sustainable,” Ms Moriarty said.

The wheelchair accessible hot air balloon is only the second in the nation and allows passengers with limited mobility, wheelchair users and other mobility aide users the opportunity to access the balloon basket via a customised door. An accessible mini-bus with wheelchair hoist also transports passengers to and from the accessible flights meaning the experience is inclusive at every point.

This project was made possible by funding provided by the NSW Government.
