A new telecommunications facility will be installed in Lane Poole Reserve’s Nanga campgrounds to improve visitor safety through better Telstra mobile phone coverage and emergency services coverage.
The new Telstra facility is co-funded by the State Government’s Regional Telecommunications Project in conjunction with the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program.
As one of the most popular areas in the region, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) identified areas around the Nanga campgrounds in Lane Poole Reserve as a site in need of improved telecommunications coverage.
DBCA has worked in collaboration with Telstra and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development to ensure the new facility improves visitor safety through strengthened emergency services coverage.
In the case of an emergency, visitors in the area will be able to receive text message notifications with important safety information via the State Emergency Alert System, as well as call authorities to report emergencies.
The facility will also provide coverage to the second Nanga entry station and nearby Trees Adventure tourism provider, enabling both areas to provide EFTPOS facilities.
Construction for the facility began last month and is expected to be completed by the end of November 2020.
As stated by Environment Minister Stephen Dawson:
“Lane Poole Reserve is one of the most popular parks in the Swan Region – last year attracting 220,000 visitors – and the safety of these visitors is incredibly important.
“This new telecommunications facility will greatly improve safety by ensuring every visitor can be reached in the event of an emergency, through the State Emergency Alert System text message alerts.”
As stated by Regional Development Minister Alannah MacTiernan:
“The Regional Telecommunications Project is an $85 million State Government initiative which is improving high-speed mobile voice and data coverage across regional WA.
“This includes the delivery of 348 new or improved infrastructure sites, which is delivering connectivity benefits to residents, businesses and visitors across these regional areas.”
