‘In Unity’: Labor leak shows it’s anything but

Dean Young, Liberal Member for Franklin

The leaked letter – signed off by Rebecca White ‘in unity’ – about Labor’s Franklin candidates exposes the damaging disunity in Tasmanian Labor.

It’s clear Tasmanian Labor is still divided over Ms White’s leadership, the toxic party room environment which led star Labor recruit Bastian Seidel to quit.

The leaked letter makes plain what everyone else can see this has been about all about: Ms White’s self-interest, and simply protecting her own job.

Throughout this farcical affair, Ms White has defined her ‘leadership’ by desperately trying to keep her leadership competitor David O’Byrne out of the Labor Party caucus.

Even to the point of recommending for endorsement Chris Lynch who was found guilty of drug possession with intent to sell, but not Mr O’Byrne himself!

Ms White’s Caucus colleagues are losing confidence in her, keeping information away from her and conducting fundraisers without her – and even the Prime Minister kept her at a distance on his last visit.

Tasmanian Labor is still hopelessly divided, relentlessly negative, and still administered from Labor overlords in Canberra.

And if you can’t govern your own party, how can you possibly claim to govern Tasmania?
