Jaensch – again – doesn’t want Tasmanians to know extent of housing crisis

  • Important statistics need to be updated today
  • What exactly do Jaensch and Hodgman have to hide?
  • Tasmanians want honesty, not deception and silly games from government

Critical information to allow Tasmanians a snapshot of the true extent of the housing crisis is once again being kept under wraps by the Hodgman Liberal Government.

Shadow Housing Minister Alison Standen said the government’s Human Services dashboard which contains important information about housing waiting lists and wait times was due to be updated today and if it was not, Minister Roger Jaensch needed to explain why not.

“Mr Jaensch has a lot of form on this, delaying the last update in January by almost a fortnight because he did not want Tasmanians to understand the true extent of his housing crisis,” Ms Standen said.

“Prior to that the December 2017 quarter update was with-held during the March election campaign – and then released on Good Friday when the government hoped no-one was watching.

“Five years ago when the Liberals assumed government they inherited a housing waiting list which was at a record low.

“In January this year there were 3,249 Tasmanian families languishing on the waiting list for public housing with an average waiting time that is now longer than a year at 56 weeks, compared to 20 weeks five years ago.

“It’s crucial we are given an update today to see if those figures have changed and this information cannot be withheld as part of the Hodgman Government’s typical dedication to secrecy.”
