Jobs boom in Adelaide’s north as work starts on major new housing development

Construction is now underway on a major new housing development in Adelaide’s north, which is expected to create 10,000 jobs and 12,000 homes.

Work begins today at Riverlea – a $2 billion master-planned community located 35 minutes north of the CBD.

Minister for Planning and Local Government Vickie Chapman says this project, financed and managed by the Walker Corporation, represents a generational investment in our state’s future.

“This presents a great opportunity for Adelaide, generating jobs for tradespeople, local businesses, and the broader construction industry,” Minister Chapman said.

“It signifies confidence in the South Australian market with the master-planned community to become home to 30,000 people,” she said.

Since it was declared a major development, state and local governments have been working closely with Walker Corporation to progress the project and deliver new infrastructure.

“Riverlea will take advantage of significant public investments in transport infrastructure, such as the recently completed Northern Connector,” Minister Chapman said.

“This comes at the perfect time for our state, with recent ABS figures showing positive net migration from interstate for the first time since 2002,” she said.

Walker Corporation’s Executive Chairman Lang Walker says Riverlea will provide contemporary homes, direct access to major transport links and a myriad of onsite and local amenities including education facilities, retail centres and local business and community services.

“Riverlea is one of the largest and most exciting residential projects to be launched in Australian history as we create a vibrant, thriving community for generations of families,” Mr Walker said.

“South Australia is the home of the original house and land package, giving people the chance to grab a slice of that great Australian dream and this is going to be the State’s best master-planned community yet.

“Riverlea will boast quality homes amongst beautiful parklands, lakes and open spaces and cater for everyone from singles to young families and empty-nesters.

“We have a real focus on nurturing communities as they grow and Riverlea will have four new schools catering from kindergarten to year 12,” he said.

This development will be completed in a staged process. Expressions of interest are now open, with settlements anticipated to occur in the third quarter of 2021.
