Koala killings warrant logging pause, investigation: Greens

Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young says footage and reports of dozens of killed and severely injured Koalas from logging on Kangaroo Island are shocking and that logging should be paused until an investigation can be undertaken.

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young is Greens Spokesperson for the Environment:

“The footage and reports of dozens of Koalas being killed and severely injured on Kangaroo Island is shocking.

“The public is rightly outraged at reports of this cruelty to koalas. These allegations of death and injury must face an independent investigation immediately, and the company responsible must be held to account.

“There can be no excuses for this senseless cruelty.

“Kangaroo Island needs a Koala management plan that is introduced and properly adhered to. It’s disappointing to hear this issue was raised with State Labor last year, but that little has been done.

“We need to ensure wildlife like Koalas are protected from logging.

“This logging should be paused until there is a real investigation. We need to ensure there is sufficient protection and habitat for the koalas which are being displaced.

“With koalas facing extinction in the eastern states, South Australia has an important and crucial role to play in protecting and maintaining koalas populations in the wild.”
