Liberal Government’s underpass inaction putting children’s lives at risk

Children’s lives are being put in danger due to the Liberal Government’s failure to deliver its election promise to build an underpass on the Midland Highway at Campbell Town.

Labor Leader and Member for Lyons, Rebecca White, said young children from the Campbell Town Primary School were being forced to run the gauntlet of trucks and cars on the highway to access the new sports precinct.

“Teachers wearing high visibility vests are required to usher young children across the highway for swimming lessons and other events including upcoming Anzac Day services – it’s an incredibly dangerous crossing,” Ms White said.

“More than a year after the Liberal Government pledged to build an underpass for the school children nothing has happened and parents and teachers are gravely concerned someone is going to get seriously injured.

“It only takes one driver to make a mistake or one inattentive child for a catastrophe to occur.”

Labor Member for Lyons, Jen Butler, said the Liberal Government needed to start work on the underpass immediately.

“Jeremy Rockliff must listen to the concerns of parents and teachers at Campbell Town and ensure work starts right away on this underpass before a serious accident occurs,” Ms Butler said.

“The Liberal Government recently announced plans to increase funding to a stock underpass scheme and while I agree this is important, the safety of our children must come first.

“The Government must allocate funding for the underpass in the next budget and show the people of Campbell Town that their children are more important than cattle.”
