Linear Joondalup Early Phase Centre opens

  • McGowan Government supports new world-leading clinical testing facility
  • Facility enables more early phase trials to be held in WA
  • Government supporting local health and medical research
  • An internationally acclaimed medical clinical trials program is now operating from a new centre in Joondalup.

Linear Clinical Research, a Western Australian not-for-profit organisation historically engaged in clinical trials of global importance, has now opened a new state-of-the art facility called the Joondalup Early Phase Centre.

Medical Research Minister Stephen Dawson welcomed today’s launch of the new facility, which has been completed with an allocation of $2.25 million from the McGowan Government’s Future Health Research Innovation (FHRI) Fund.

The Joondalup Early Phase Centre will be one of the most advanced clinical trial centres in the entire Asia-Pacific region, and will help position WA as a leading destination for the world’s leading biopharmaceutical companies.

Early phase trials are the first step in testing new medicines that have been developed in the laboratory, and the new centre will enable a larger number of healthy volunteer, early phase clinical trials to be held in WA.

More than 1,200 trial participants are expected to take part in clinical trials at the centre each year, with the facility working collaboratively with the WA health system, through the Joondalup Health Campus.

The refurbished building includes 24 beds for trial participants, and three separate zones to support infection control and the provision of multiple trial designs.

Clinical trials at the centre will include first-in-human, drug-to-drug interaction, and vaccine and biosimilar trials.

The centre will also house specimen collection facilities, a pre-processing laboratory, clinical trial pharmacy facilities, information and communication technologies, and volunteer recreation facilities.
