Local Strategic Planning Statement open for comment – Wollongong

Wollongong City Council is inviting all community members to join the conversation on the draft Wollongong Local Strategic Planning Statement [LSPS].

The draft LSPS will set out how we will manage growth and change over the next 20 years, including the actions and outcomes that will help us achieve our vision for the future of the local government area.

“This planning statement will work with other documents to inform Council’s planning process. Along with the Community Strategic Plan, the Illawarra Regional Plan, the Local Environmental Plan and the Development Control Plans, this document reflects the land use priorities and is required by recent planning legislation,” Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery AM said.

“We’re keen to hear from our community about what they think of Council’s draft Statement, as well as State Government agencies and interested companies and organisations. This feedback will be compiled and considered as part of the finalisation of the first LSPS for the city.

“We’re seeking comments and opinions in six different areas: jobs and economic growth, housing for all, inclusive and connected communities, climate action and resilience, protecting the natural environment and enabling infrastructure and transport.”

Council has always been proactive in developing strategic documents to support our activities and making sure that the community has opportunity to have their say on these documents. Therefore, the draft Statement does not reinvent the wheel and instead draws on this existing suite of supporting strategies to provide a consolidated source document to set our strategic planning and policy direction. For instance, in the Jobs and Economic Growth section, the Statement is consistent with our existing Economic Development Strategy, which was adopted in 2019 and has a key aim of generating 10,500 local jobs over the next decade. While under Housing for all section, reference is made to the draft Housing and Affordable Housing Options papers that is currently on exhibition. Finalising and implementing the options paper will be core to how we manage housing under the LSPS.

Once Council has the comments and ideas that the public provide during exhibition we will put a final Statement to the Council for adoption and then load this onto the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment portal.

Information on the draft statement is now on our website.
