Luminous lights up Fitzroy Street

Five public art installations will light up Fitzroy Street St Kilda from October 2019 to February 2020.

The Luminous exhibition follows extensive consultation and conceptualisation with residents, traders and the broader community as part of Port Phillip Council’s placemaking initiatives.

More than 40 applications were received for the $5000 grants, which were assessed by a committee of Council officers, Fitzroy Street Business Association members and the Director of Linden New Art, Melinda Martin.

From the grandeur of the historic George Hotel at one end, to the beach at the Esplanade at the other, each of the five installations connect with their individual site.

Mayor Dick Gross said Luminous showcases the creativity St Kilda is renowned for.

“We want a City which is jam-packed with dynamic places and precincts for our residents and visitors to enjoy. Luminous captures the artistic spirit of St Kilda and encourages the audience to enjoy Fitzroy Street’s sweeping boulevards and great dining and shopping destinations,” Cr Gross said.

Through light, projection, mural, installation and film, Luminous reflects on our connections with place, nature and diversity. The exhibition is a meditation on the complexities and multi-dimensional nature of Fitzroy Street, with each artwork its own unique love letter to St Kilda.

The installations invite visitors to Fitzroy Street to experience new ways of viewing, engaging and celebrating the iconic St Kilda strip, and bringing creative expression to everyday life.

Luminous features the works of art by PluginHUMAN, Tom Gerrard, Elizabeth West, John Fish and Nick Kozakis and Carl Allison.

Everyone is welcome to attend the official launch of Luminous on Saturday 5 October 2019 at 4 pm at Linden New Art Gallery, 26 Acland Street St Kilda.

If you’d like to play your part through art or other initiatives in the placemaking program for Fitzroy Street, Love My Place grants have just opened.
