Mac Point development fail

  • Liberals mismanagement continues to impact MacPoint
  • Development plans contradict government’s own commitments
  • Peter Gutwein must intervene
  • The Liberal government’s disastrous mismanagement of infrastructure projects continues to impact Macquarie Point development plans, with new development proposals at odds with previous commitments made by the government.

Shadow Minister for Roads and Transport, David O’Byrne, said it’s time Peter Gutwein intervened to fix his own mess.

“The ongoing mismanagement of the Macquarie Point development is of Peter Guwein’s own making,” Mr O’Byrne said.

“The development of Macquarie Point is a once in a generation opportunity to reinvent Hobart’s waterfront, create much needed jobs, and attract investment – all of which are vital for Tasmania’s COVID-19 economic recovery – but the government’s trademark dysfunction when it comes to infrastructure is putting that all at risk.

“The announcement of a new road as part of the Macquarie Point development plan is completely at odds with the government’s own commitments to preserve the rail transport corridor and provide a public transport service along the rail corridor to the Hobart CBD.

“It is a monumental fail of the Liberals that after six years in Government that their initial $50 million Macquarie Point investment first went nowhere and is now threatening the Hobart’s chance of finally getting passenger rail.

“Labor shares Glenorchy Mayor, Kristie Johnston’s concerns about the Development Application.

“We are calling on Hobart City Council to consider the impact of the Macquarie Point proposal on passenger rail plans.

“This project’s vision, timelines and investment opportunities have been botched from the beginning and it’s time Peter Gutwein provided a definitive update to business and the community about what is actually happening.”
