Premier Mark McGowan and Albany MLA Peter Watson visited Mount Lockyer Primary School today to announce the school will undergo a $15.2 million major redevelopment.
Situated in the booming suburb of Mount Lockyer, popular with young families, the 65-year-old school’s current facilities are old and dated.
The redevelopment will include the construction of a new administration building, new classrooms and refurbishment of a cluster of classrooms built in the 1970s.
Works will be undertaken in stages to ensure school operations and student’s learning is not disrupted while construction is underway.
Once completed, the school will provide permanent capacity for 648 students and will have space to increase this to 700 if required.
As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:
“I want to see kids from all around Western Australia learning and thriving in the best possible school environments.
“We made a commitment in 2017 to upgrade Mount Lockyer Primary School, but we’ve decided to go one step further and demolish the school’s original buildings to start afresh and provide modern facilities for students and staff.
“We originally allocated $3 million to upgrade the school. However, after a recent visit I decided that a complete rebuild was a far better option.
“This was only made possible by the hard work of Peter Watson MLA, who listened to what the school needed and campaigned hard to make it happen.
“My Government is committed to continuing to deliver world-class facilities for regional Western Australia.”
As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
“At 65 years old, some of the buildings at Mount Lockyer Primary School have seen better days and are unable to keep up with the growing student population.
“This $15.2 million redevelopment will provide brand new modern facilities for students to learn in.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the redevelopment take place and I applaud Peter Watson MLA and the school community for their tireless campaigning in making these upgrades happen.”

“Mount Lockyer is a popular suburb in Albany for young families and it’s important the area has a primary school that can keep up with the community’s needs.
“I am so happy we have been able to deliver this much needed funding to Mount Lockyer Primary School.
“There have been so many people involved in making this happen including the school principal, staff and community.
“This is a big win for our local community, will make a big difference for our local kids and demonstrates the McGowan Labor Government is committed to delivering for regional WA.”
