More than $35.6M has been awarded to over 82 Monash University research projects in Discovery Projects funding – the most for any Australian university – with a further five projects receiving over $2.9M in Linkage Grants funding from the Australian Research Council (ARC).
Provost and Senior Vice-President Professor Marc Parlange said the funding recognises the strength of Monash University’s research in delivering positive impact worldwide.

This is a testament to the high quality of our research and our focus on developing solutions to real-world challenges. It is wonderful to see the ARC acknowledge that tremendous potential. My warmest congratulations to all involved.”
The Honourable Dan Tehan, Federal Minister for Education, made the announcement on Friday.
The Discovery Projects scheme aims to grow knowledge and research capacity in Australia, supporting research that will provide economic, commercial, environmental and social benefits. The Linkage Program promotes national and international research partnerships between researchers and business, industry, community organisations and other publicly funded research agencies.
Discovery Projects and Linkage grants funded across nine Faculties includes:
- Several projects addressing violence and insecurity from gendered perspectives, including a review of domestic violence disclosure schemes (Associate Professor Kate Fitz-Gibbon, Faculty of Arts)
- Quantifying the threat posed by feral cats to Australian reptiles (Associate Professor David Chapple, Faculty of Science)
- Helping cities and urban regions reach net zero emissions by co-creating a new approach grounded in transition management and design anthropology (Professor Rob Raven, Monash Sustainable Development Institute)
- Investigating big data: implications for competition, privacy and regulation(Professor Chongwoo Choe, Faculty of Business and Economics)
- Primary teachers’ adaptive expertise in interdisciplinary maths and science (Professor Amanda Berry, Faculty of Education)
- Teachers’ capabilities in responding to superdiversity (Professor Alex Kostogriz, Faculty of Education)
- Photoreversible hydrogels to study stem cell memory and fate (Associate Professor Jessica Frith, Faculty of Engineering)
- Human-centred Teamwork Analytics(Professor Dragan Gasevic, Faculty of Information Technology)
- Remaking post-industrial plans: urban industrial zoning past and future (Professor Carl Grodach, Faculty of Arts, Design and Architecture)
- Individualised predictions of circadian timing, sleep, and performance (Dr Andrew Phillips, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences)
- Next generation enzymes using stimuli responsive protein/polymer hybrids (Dr Angus Johnston, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences)
