Multi-agency rescue launched after yacht ran aground in Whitsundays

A multi-agency search was launched on Monday after a man’s yacht ran aground on Hook Island.

Around 11am, the 71-year-old man suffered a medical episode, causing him to lose consciousness and his yacht run aground.

A mayday call was made and relayed by a passing vessel launching a four-hour rescue operation.

Police Vessel Damien Leeding launched with two paramedics on board to assist the man. Once on scene, the sailor was found conscious but trapped under furniture as a result of the crash.

The CQ Rescue helicopter was called to extract the man, due to the difficult terrain and prevailing weather conditions. He was flown to Mackay Base Hospital with minor injuries.

Whitsunday Water Police Senior Constable Brett Norris said the incident is a reminder there are risks when operating a vessel alone.

“Sometimes unexpected events happen on the water,” he said.

“If operating alone, it’s even more important to plan for the unexpected and let someone know of your journey.

“In this case, we are pleased the man is expected to make a full recovery.”
