The 3rd Brigade conducted their first major assault at Line Creek Junction, Townsville Field Training Area during Exercise Talisman Sabre 23.

Partnering with German and US troops, they joined forces to clear an urban area littered with enemy role players, who refused to go down without a fight.

German Army Paratrooper, Corporal Noah said he had never trained in a training area of this scale before.

“We have similar training facilities in Germany, but this is the largest I’ve seen,” Corporal Noah said.

“It took us time to get used to the tough terrain, manoeuvring around obstacles such as creeks and riverbeds.”

Corporal Noah said he appreciates the opportunity to train in the Townsville Field Training Area and the obstacles within, which will help condition him for a variety of environments.

This is the first time Germany has taken part in Exercise Talisman Sabre.

This year the multinational exercise expanded to 13 nations with more than 30,000 military personnel participating.

United States Army Staff Sergeant Michael DeLuna is acting as liaison between the US and German Army.

“My job is to make sure US and German forces understand the Commander’s intent throughout the exercise,” Staff Sergeant DeLuna said.

“Watching the German and Australian Army in action has been the best learning experience.

“Observing the way they do their tactics, communicate with each other, clear and do markings.

“I look forward to taking what I’ve learnt back home to become a better Squad Leader for my soldiers,” he said.

The combined assault of Line Creek Junction saw forces from three different nations clear an objective collaboratively, working together seamlessly and leveraging each other’s strengths to defeat the enemy.

Over the next fortnight 3rd Brigade troops will take part in training with partnered nations including Great Britain, New Zealand, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and South Korea, collaborating to fight against a capable adversary, and win at the end of the day.
