NAIDOC Week at Notre Dame

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year (Sunday to Sunday), to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

The University of Notre Dame Australia proudly supports the 2023 National NAIDOC Week theme: For Our Elders.

Within our university, we recognise and honor the crucial role our Elders have played across generations, as well as their enduring significance within our communities and families.

Our Elders are the custodians of cultural knowledge, the pioneers who have paved the way for us, the nurturers who guide and support us, and the advocates who champion our rights. They are the leaders, the hard workers, and most importantly, our loved ones.

Their wisdom and experience are sources of strength for us in various areas, including land management, cultural knowledge, justice, and human rights. From healthcare to education, from the arts to politics, they have set the foundations we build upon.

As the University of Notre Dame Australia, we stand alongside our Elders during NAIDOC Week, celebrating their invaluable contributions and committing ourselves to support their aims and aspirations.
