Kensington’s new $8 million fire station has been officially unveiled by Emergency Services Minister Francis Logan today.
The new station, built in consultation with firefighters according to their needs and funded through the Emergency Services Levy, replaces the existing facility built in 1973.
The new station has a much larger vehicle bay, dedicated learning facilities with a new training tower and rescue training area, and an integrated gym and outdoor area.
The building’s functional design reflects emergency response capability changes in the local urban landscape in recent decades, particularly an increase in medium to high-rise residential and commercial buildings.
It also has the capacity for future expansion to accommodate for future population growth.
The new facility has been built at the rear of the old station on George Street, alongside WA Police and St John Ambulance.
Construction was undertaken by McCorkell Constructions (WA) Pty Ltd.
The station is expected to be fully operational by April.
As stated by Emergency Services Minister Francis Logan:
“The new Kensington Fire Station is a state-of-the-art facility that will enhance emergency services for Perth’s south-eastern communities and be able to respond to future population growth and changes to the urban landscape.
“A key feature in the design of this project has been the input from firefighters so that the final product meets the needs of the personnel who will use this station.
“This project is a great example of how the Emergency Services Levy is invested back into local communities, delivering modern infrastructure to provide an outstanding service to the public.”
As stated by Victoria Park MLA Ben Wyatt:
“I am delighted that we will have a new, modern fire station that will be better able to meet the needs of our local communities, which have changed significantly since the original station was built.
“As we have all seen over recent weeks with a number of bushfires around Perth, firefighting services are vital for keeping our community safe.
“This new facility will ensure the firefighters that do so much for us have the best infrastructure and facilities to continue doing their important work in the south-eastern suburbs.”
