New appointment to Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Board

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Duane Fraser, a Wulgurukaba and Bidjara Traditional Owner, to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Board.

Mr Fraser has extensive experience advising Commonwealth and State Governments on matters relating to Traditional Owners. He brings a wealth of knowledge to the Board and fulfills its firm commitment to indigenous representation.

A current member of the Department of the Environment and Energy’s Indigenous Advisory Committee established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, Mr Fraser has also served on the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s Indigenous Reef Advisory Committee.

Mr Fraser has advised on Traditional Owner perspectives on management of the Great Barrier Reef, including as a member of the Reef 2050 Advisory Committee. Recently, he led Traditional Owner engagement and stakeholder discussions as a member of a consortium of Indigenous and research organisations engaged by the Australian Government to provide advice on Traditional Owner aspirations under the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan.

The Australian Government recognises that an effective and meaningful partnership with Reef Traditional Owners is essential to protect the cultural and heritage values of the Great Barrier Reef, to conserve its biodiversity and build its resilience.
