New Brighton High School start date in doubt

  • Rockliff must explain poor management of new Brighton High School project
  • Government and council at odds over the project
  • Does the $30 million include land acquisition?
  • The Minority Liberal Government must explain its poor management of the new Brighton High School development.

The State Government and the Brighton Council are clearly at odds over the project with the council preparing for the new school to be developed on the current Jordan River Learning School farm site.

At the same time, Jeremy Rockliff has ruled this site out and the Department of Education is running community consultation on three alternative sites, two of these are owned by the council and one is owned privately.

Shadow Minister for Education and Early Years, Josh Willie, said the Government had botched the process.

“This project is facing serious delays because of the conflict between the State Government and the Brighton Council on the preferred site,” Mr Willie said.

“It looks like Jeremy Rockliff has no idea how or when or where he’s going to get this school built.

“Council are already working on the basis that the school will be built at the existing School Farm site but the Jeremy Rockliff says it’s no good – community members are rightly wondering what is going on.

“If Jeremy Rockliff can’t sit down with council and sort this out, is he planning to compulsorily acquire the Brighton Council land for the project?

“Given one of the preferred sites is privately owned, Jeremy Rockliff must also come clean and reveal whether the $30 million allocated to the project includes funding for land acquisition. If it doesn’t, is this just another unfunded election promise?”
