Fremantle Council has adopted a new One Planet Framework and Action Plan which sets sustainability actions and targets for the next five years.
One Planet Living, created and overseen by not-for-profit organisation Bioregional, is a vision for a sustainable world where people lead healthy, happy lives within their fair share of the earth’s resources.
The City of Fremantle was recognised as a One Planet Council in 2014, and became the fourth council in the world to achieve international certification in October 2015.
As part of One Planet the City has committed to ten core sustainability principles, such as making buildings more energy efficient, reducing waste, encouraging low carbon forms of transport and using water more efficiently.
Fremantle Mayor Brad Pettitt said the success of the One Planet Strategy has seen the City of Fremantle recognised by Bioregional as a global leader in sustainability.
“The council adopted its initial five-year One Planet Strategy in 2014, and since then looking after the planet and doing things more sustainably has become central to everything the City does,” Mayor Pettitt said.
“For example, we’ve implemented our Corporate Energy Plan to work towards 100 per cent renewable energy by 2025, we’ve introduced the FOGO three-bin system and have one of the best recycling rates in Perth, we’ve established our Sustainable Events Policy which bans single-use plastics and been a leader in using recycled materials in City infrastructure projects.
“The council also continues to support the community’s efforts to reduce their environmental footprint through use of tools like the Climate Clever app, which City of Fremantle residents can access for $15 for the first year.
“The new One Planet Framework and the accompanying Action Plan sets new priorities and targets for the next five years and has been designed to reinforce and extend the good work of the past five years.”
Last week Fremantle Council noted the progress made by the City in the area of sustainability over the past five years.
The council also adopted a new One Planet Framework and Action Plan to guide the City’s activities and priorities in pursuing sustainability goals.
The new targets in the One Planet Framework include planting an average of 1000 trees per year through the Urban Forest Plan and increasing tree canopy cover to 20 per cent by 2027, reducing scheme water use by 10 per cent over the next five years and having 70 per cent diversion from landfill by 2030.
