New life span for Campbell Street

Rockhampton Regional Council has recently completed a road rehabilitation project on Campbell Street, bringing improved infrastructure and enhanced street aesthetics to the local area.

The project was funded under the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program with a contribution of $1.2 million.

Works commenced in February 2023 and are now fully complete with the road now re-opened to all traffic.

The Hon Michelle Landry Federal Member for Capricornia said the Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program is one of many initiatives from the former Coalition Government to support local jobs, businesses and boost the economy at a local level during COVID-19.

“I am happy to say that Central Queensland councils including Rockhampton Regional Council have benefitted greatly over the years from this program.

“As Rockhampton continues to grow and thoroughfares like Campbell Street are taking more and more traffic, I will continue to fight hard for Capricornia’s share of this money that helps councils maintain our cities and towns at a grassroots level.”

Infrastructure Councillor Ellen Smith said LRCI Program has enabled Council to deliver and program over $7.4M in much needed road upgrades across the Region throughout the first three phases of the program, including River Rose Drive, which is still under construction.

“The conclusion of this project marks yet another successful road upgrade thanks to the Australian Government’s support,” Cr Smith said.

“Council is committed to investing in a stronger Region, and delivering safer, upgraded roads is an important component of that goal.

Cr Smith said the decision to initiate the upgrade on Campbell Street was prompted by the road asset reaching the end of its operational lifespan.

“One of the primary objectives of this project was to improve traffic flow and parking facilities along Campbell Street,” Cr Smith said.

“The upgrade involved a comprehensive range of improvements, including the installation of new kerb and channel structures, replacement and upgrading of pavement surfaces, asphalt overlay, and landscaping to contribute to the street’s overall ambiance.

“The pavement and kerb rehabilitation undertaken during this project also anticipates a reduction in the maintenance demand for this road section, saving valuable resources over the long term.

“With these upgrades in place motorists can enjoy smoother journeys and more accessible on-street parking options.

“I would like to thank residents and businesses for their patience during this project.”
