The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is committed to ensuring that Tasmanians have access to an effective and efficient justice system.
As the Attorney-General it gives me great pleasure to announce that Mr Robert Webster has now been formally appointed by Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner, AC, Governor of Tasmania to the Hobart Magistrates Court in accordance with the Magistrates Court Act 1987. This process to fill the vacancy followed the recent retirement in August of Magistrate Sam Mollard and was undertaken in accordance with the official Protocol for Judicial Appointments.
I congratulate Mr Webster who will begin as a Magistrate on 7 October 2019 after transitioning from his current roles.
Mr Webster has been the Chief Commissioner of the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Tribunal since 2016. As such he is concurrently the Chairperson of the Health Practitioners Tribunal, Anti-Discrimination Tribunal, Motor Accidents Compensation Tribunal and Asbestos Compensation Tribunal.
He previously practised law in Hobart for more than 20 years, and is very well respected within the legal profession.
I thank Mr Mollard again for his distinguished service to the administration of justice in Tasmania.
Consistent with the Government’s commitment to Tasmania’s justice system, expressions of interest for an additional Magistrate for Tasmania, funded in the 2019-20 State Budget, will soon be called for.
