Wollert’s newest community hub now has a fitting name to mark its opening later this year. Kirrip Community Centre, selected in consultation with local residents, celebrates the centre’s historic location and goals.
Kirrip means ‘friend’ in the local Woi Wurrung language of the Wurundjeri people, reflecting the rich Aboriginal history of the area and the social connections that will be made at the new multipurpose centre.
Kirrip Community Centre, formerly known as Wollert East Community Centre, includes a modern three‑room kindergarten, two fully equipped maternal and child health consulting suites, a community hall for hire and flexible meeting spaces for community groups.
City of Whittlesea Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said that the name complements the facility’s purpose and the opportunities provided by the centre for new friendships.
“Kirrip Community Centre will be a place for people to come together, socialise and share their ideas and experiences,” Ms Wilson said.
“The new name honours the Aboriginal roots of the centre’s location and acknowledges the role community facilities and public spaces play in connecting communities.”
Maternal and Child Health services will operate from Kirrip Community Centre from December 2021. Kindergarten programs will start in January 2022. Applications for three and four-year-old kindergarten for 2022 are now open. To apply visit whittlesea.vic.gov.au/kinder
