A new mural that represents the gold-laden quartz reefs that run underneath the city has come to life on the Bendigo Town Hall forecourt.
Bendigo street art collective, Nacho Station, has collaborated with Melbourne artist Chehehe to create the huge abstract mural.
City of Greater Bendigo Senior Strategic Planner Philip DeAraugo said the artists had been given plenty of freedom to come up with a unique design that would complement other public art projects.
“The City commissioned this mural to continue our work to make the city centre an enjoyable and interesting place to walk around,” Mr DeAraugo said.
“We want people to explore the city on foot and give our traders more opportunities to entice customers into their stores.
“The mural also serves a dual purpose – we think it will prompt drivers to slow down and keep an eye out for pedestrians and cyclists in a busy part of the city.”
Nacho Station’s Reece Hendy said the project had attracted a lot of attention over the weekend.
“The feedback has been great, with people stopping to ask both why and what the mural represents,” Mr Hendy said.
“They loved that it turned a piece of grey asphalt into something interesting and created a welcoming ‘doormat’ for the Town Hall.”
“We needed to be very respectful of the heritage setting that we were in. We think heritage attractions can work really well alongside contemporary public artworks.”
