A man will face court today charged with assaulting two officers during an arrest following a vehicle stop in West Tamworth overnight.
About 8.20pm (Friday 23 July 2021), officers attached to Oxley Police District stopped the driver of a Holden Commodore on Sue Crescent, Tamworth, for the purpose of a random breath test.
Police spoke with the driver, a 19-year-old woman, and subjected her to a roadside breath test which returned a negative result.
Officers also spoke to her passenger, a 19-year-old man, who was in the back seat of the car.
The man allegedly would not give police his details before getting out of the car and running from officers.
A male constable, aged 25, and a female senior constable, aged 42, stopped the man a short distance away and a struggle ensued.
During this time, officers were surrounded by a group of bystanders and were hit from behind, a number of times.
The 19-year-old was arrested and taken to Tamworth Police Station.
The female officer dislocated her right shoulder during the incident, while the male officer suffered a suspected broken hand.
Both were taken to Tamworth Base Hospital for treatment.
The man has been charged with state false name to police officer, two counts of assault police officer in execution of duty cause actual bodily harm, and resist officer in execution of duty.
He was refused bail to appear at Tamworth Local Court today (Saturday 24 July 2021).
The 19-year-old woman was served a Future Court Attendance Notice (FCAN) for never licensed person drive vehicle on road – first offence and is due to appear at Tamworth Local Court Monday 13 September 2021.
