Northern Territory Major Events Company

Students from seven Darwin schools have officially set a Guinness World Record for the most people making paper aircrafts simultaneously at multiple venues.

A total of 2292 students folded paper aircrafts for a 15 minute period, resulting in 14964 paper planes being created. A minimum of 1,943 participants were needed to secure the world record.

Darwin High School, Darwin Middle School, Parap, Stuart Park, Ludmilla, Larrakeyah and Nightcliff Primary Schools all took part in the world record between 8.50am and 9:05am ACST today.

The Guinness World Record Attempt forms part of the program of events celebrating the Great Air Race Centenary.

Along with a commemorative plaque to acknowledge the schools’ involvement in the world record, a tree will be planted at each school in honour of the Great Air Race Centenary and to offset the paper used as part of the world record event.

The event was operated by Northern Territory Major Events Company, who will hold the official Guinness World Record for the most people making paper planes simultaneously on behalf of the collective schools.

As noted by Northern Territory Major Events Company General Manager Tim Watsford:

· “I would like to congratulate all of the schools involved in achieving the Guinness World Record for the most people folding paper aircrafts simultaneously.

· “The world record has been a really fun way to get the community involved in the Great Air Race Centenary celebrations and I’m sure all of the staff and students have had a lot of fun.”

As noted by Guinness World Record Adjudicator Solvej Malouf:

· “To be a Guinness World Records Title, we have some very strict guidelines, and the organisers know it, it’s really very difficult before announcing the result.

· “We needed a minimum of 1,943 participants to take part today, and I can confirm that we had 2,292 participants: it’s a new Guinness World Records Title for the most people making paper aircrafts simultaneously (multiple venues).

· “I am so happy and proud to award this to NTMEC who will hold the record on behalf of the collective of seven Darwin schools. Congratulations. You are officially amazing!”

As noted by Parap Primary School Principal Yvonne Harding:

· “We are very excited to have achieved the Guinness World Record today.

· “The event has been a fantastic way for our students to learn about the Great Air Race in its centenary year.”
