Nurse-turned-lawyer appointed to State Administrative Tribunal

  • Maryellen Hipworth appointed an Ordinary Member of State Administrative Tribunal
  • Assistant State Solicitor began her career as a registered nurse 
  • Attorney General John Quigley is pleased to announce the appointment of Assistant State Solicitor Maryellen Hipworth as a Member of the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT).

    A former registered nurse, Ms Hipworth has worked at the State Solicitor’s Office since 2008, often with a focus on medical and health matters.

    In the past two years she has played a significant role in advising the State Government on legal issues in handling the COVID-19 pandemic.

    After graduating and working as a nurse, Ms Hipworth studied law at Murdoch University and was admitted to the Supreme Court of Western Australia as a Barrister and Solicitor in 2006.

    She has also worked for Slater & Gordon Lawyers and the Department of Health.

    Ms Hipworth has been appointed an Ordinary Member of the SAT for a five-year term.

    As stated by Attorney General John Quigley:

    “I congratulate Maryellen Hipworth on her appointment to the State Administrative Tribunal.

    “Ms Hipworth has served the public admirably during her 14 years at the State Solicitor’s Office, during which she has negotiated commercial agreements and conducted civil litigation.

    “During the pandemic she has provided complex, sensitive and high-level legal advice to the Department of Health and the WA Police Force.

    “She also played an important part in helping the Government defend the High Court challenge to its COVID-19 border controls.”
