The Greater Cities Commission and the NUW Alliance have partnered to launch a research internship for students. The program enables students to help shape plans for Australia’s first global multi-city region, spanning the Hunter, Greater Sydney and the Illawarra.

The NUW Alliance is a partnership of four leading universities: the University of Newcastle, UNSW Sydney, the University of Wollongong and Western Sydney University. Together, the partner universities pursue collaborations in the interests of their ‘Six Cities Region’ communities. The GCC and NUW Alliance footprints aligns synergising with government planning, community aspirations and industry trajectories.

The inaugural internship program will provide 30 students with the unique opportunity to work on envisaging the future of our cities and gain practical experience.

NUW Alliance Chief Executive Officer, Professor Andy Marks said the innovative program will add a new dimension to planning and policy frameworks.

“Bringing together students from a range of disciplines, and a rich diversity of backgrounds, students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge to real-life challenges and provide critical input into designing cities for the future,” Professor Marks said.

“The cities of the future are planned today. Incorporating the voices and viewpoints of NUW Alliance’s students will ensure our region continues to be the number one place in Australia for people to work, live and study,” Professor Marks said.

Applications for the internships are open now and close on 15 May.
