Paw-some storytime brings rescue dogs to Wollongong Library

Both the tales and tails will be heartwarming when Wollongong Library hosts a special adopt-a-dog storytime on Thursday 9 July 2026.

Locals young and old are invited to settle in to hear author Tim Brown read his newest release, Rusty is Rescued. Even better? The story won’t just stay on the pages; joining Tim will be some very impawtant guests from Wollongong City Council’s Pet Connection program which unites rescue animals with the loving homes they deserve.

Wollongong City Libraries Manager Jessica Bruce said the event was perfect for young readers, families and animal lovers alike, offering an engaging introduction to the responsibilities of pet ownership.

“Our adopt-a-dog storytime is about bringing books, families and rescues together in a fun and meaningful way. And who knows – you might just meet your newest family member,” Jessica said.

“It’s not just for potential pawrents either; our libraries are for everyone, and this event is no different. You might come along to cuddle the dogs, keep the school holiday blues at bay, or just to get out of the house. We have room for everyone!

“If you don’t yet have a library card, this is the perfect reason to join. It’s free and easy to sign up and opens the door to a world of stories, events and experiences like this one.”

Author Tim Brown, from Sydney’s south, said Rusty’s story was based on his experience adopting a red cattle dog and helping him adapt to life with a loving family.

“We rescued the real-life Rusty in 2020. The book is based off our experience and a rescue pets’ journey through the foster care system. Our rescue cats — Tuffy and Monkey — feature as well!” he said.

Beyond promoting adoption, Tim is also hoping to get both kids and adults talking about pet body language and how animals might feel in different situations.

“I’m super passionate about rescue animals and I love the idea that this book can inspire and educate kids across Australia and beyond. If it can spark conversation and help change the lives of even a few rescue pets along the way, I’ll be happy.

“Because every Rusty deserves a forever home.”

He called partnering with Wollongong Pet Connection at the upcoming storytime “really exciting” with real-life rescue dogs coming for cuddles and to maybe meet their forever family.

The Council-led Pet Connection program works to reunite lost pets with their owners and foster or rehome those that are unclaimed or surrendered. Since launching in 2024, the award-winning program has significantly improved animal welfare outcomes and increased community engagement. This has resulted in the adoption of almost 1,000 pets (and counting!) and nearly 300 registered foster carers.

Attending the storytime will be a number of pets currently available for adoption through the program. Their profiles can be viewed on the Wollongong City Council website.

The Adventures of Rusty the Dog: Rusty is Rescued is available to borrow from Wollongong City Libraries. If you’d like your own copy to keep, it’s available through the Rusty’s Rescue Adventures website and local book retailers. For every copy sold, a percentage goes to support animal rescue charities.
