Plan for supporting Tasmania’s unpaid carers

Jeremy Rockliff,Minister for Community Services and Development

Today we release our new plan to support Tasmania’s unpaid carers, building on the success of previous action plans and delivering on an important commitment in our first 100 Day Plan.

Our Supporting Tasmanian Carers: Tasmanian Carer Action Plan 2021-24 supports the important and critical role of the over 80,000 informal carers in Tasmania.

It recognises the commitment of unpaid Tasmanian carers and supports their active participation in economic, social and community life for themselves and the people for whom they care.

These Tasmanians include ageing parents caring for adult children, as well as children caring for parents and grandparents, who for a variety of reasons, are now primary carers of grandchildren.

Building on the success of our previous Action Plan 2017-20, our new Plan has three key action areas to support Tasmanian carers: Recognition, Access and Participation and Learning.

A centrepiece action is the introduction of Carer Recognition legislation to formally acknowledge the thousands of carers in our community and promote and value the importance of care relationships.

This Action Plan also commits to establishing a Carers Week community grants program which will enable organisations to deliver events to celebrate National Carers Week as well as increase awareness of services available to carers.

I would like to thank and commend Tasmania’s hard working and dedicated carers for their commitment to supporting their family and friends, and the difference they make in so many Tasmanian lives.

In particular, I would like to acknowledge the carers who were at the forefront during COVID-19 and stepped up to ensure that people in their care were protected and supported.
