At its July meeting, Council resolved to seek authorisation from the Minister for Planning to prepare and exhibit Planning Scheme Amendment C179basc, a key step in progressing the long-term vision for the Phillip Island Sporting Precinct.
The amendment proposes to rezone the site from the Farming Zone to the Public Park and Recreation Zone and remove the Public Acquisition Overlay, reflecting that the land has already been acquired and is planned for future recreation and community uses.
The proposed amendment supports the implementation of the Phillip Island Recreation Reserve Master Plan, adopted by Council in 2023, which identifies the site as a future recreation hub for the growing Phillip Island community.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari, said the planning amendment reflects years of advocacy and a shared commitment from Councillors to deliver for the Phillip Island community.
“Councillors have consistently heard from the community about the need for additional recreation and community facilities on Phillip Island, and there has been strong support around the Council table to keep this project moving forward,” Cr Tessari said.
“I’d particularly like to acknowledge and congratulate the Island Ward Councillors for their advocacy and commitment to this project, and for continuing to champion the needs and aspirations of the Phillip Island community.”
“While there is still more work to do, this is a positive step and another sign that the long-term vision for the Sporting Precinct is progressing. It’s exciting to see the groundwork being laid for facilities that will support sport, recreation and community connection for future generations.”
Bass Coast continues to experience population growth and increasing visitation, creating greater demand for recreation, sport and community infrastructure. If authorised by the Minister for Planning, the amendment will be publicly exhibited in accordance with the Planning and Environment Act 1987, providing the community with an opportunity to review the proposal and have their say.
This important planning step will help ensure the land is appropriately zoned to support future delivery of recreation and community facilities for generations to come.
