Police arrest man after aggravated break & enter in Balmain

A man remains in hospital after being arrested over the aggravated break and enter of a home in Balmain overnight.

About 3.45am (Monday 10 June 2019), emergency services were called to Llewellyn Street after reports an intruder had forced entry through the glass front door of the home.

The male occupant of the home was woken by the noise and walked from a bedroom and saw the man.

The home owner observed the intruder was erratic and contacted police.

The intruder barricaded himself in a bedroom of the home, after arming himself with knives from kitchen.

The resident was able to move his wife, daughter and grandparents safely to another area of the home.

Officers from Leichhardt Police Area Command attended and established a perimeter around the premises.

As police attempted to negotiate with the intruder the resident and his family were safely removed from the home.

Officers continued to negotiate with the man who was eventually arrested without incident about 5.20am.

The 33-year-old man was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital for treatment to a laceration on his arm and for assessment.

Inquiries into the incident continue.
