Quotes attributable to Detective Inspector Steve Soden, Arson and Explosives Squad:

‘A large amount of illegal commercial fireworks were seized as a result of today’s operation.

‘Commercial fireworks are classed as a type of explosive and banned for use by the general public because they are extremely dangerous in untrained hands.

‘Alongside the risk of serious injury or death, fireworks are unpredictable and volatile items that can result in fires – both grassfires and bushfires – as well as causing substantial property damage.

‘If you’re caught with illegal fireworks, not only do you face a prison sentence of up to 15 years and thousands of dollars in fines, you’re putting yourself, your friends, family and the community in danger.

‘Victoria Police will continue to target anyone caught possessing or using illegal fireworks.

‘Don’t risk your safety and that of others for what might seem like a good idea at the time. It’s just not worth it.’
