Police commend teen who intervened in domestic violence incident in Riverstone

A 14-year-old boy is being commended for his bravery after intervening in a domestic violence incident in Sydney’s northwest yesterday.

At 3.20pm (Friday 28 February 2020), a man and woman became involved in an argument while walking along Garfield Road West in Riverstone.

The man allegedly punched the woman in the face multiple times, causing a cut to her lip and bruising to her nose.

A 14-year-old boy, travelling along the same road on a school bus, witnessed the incident. He alighted from the bus at Riverstone Railway Station and approached the man, refusing to leave the scene until the man left the woman alone.

The man, aged 32, allegedly grabbed the teen by the throat and pushed him away before other members of the public also intervened.

The man and woman, aged 27, left the scene in a red Holden Commodore travelling towards Lion’s Park.

Officers attached to Quakers Hill Police Area Command were alerted to the incident and stopped the Holden a short distance away.

The 32-year-old man from Bidwell was arrested and taken to Riverstone Police Station where he was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm (DV) and common assault.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Saturday 29 February 2020).

Quakers Hill Duty Officer, Detective Chief Inspector David Miller, commends the brave actions of the teenage boy.

“This young man should be recognised for his bravery in intervening in a domestic violence situation.

“He showed courage and determination well beyond his years. We certainly need more people like this in the community who stand up and speak out against domestic violence.” Det Ch Insp Miller said.
