On July 31, eight-year-old Police Dog (PD) Kaos was awarded the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia (GSDCA) Outstanding Canine Service Award at a ceremony at the Dogs Queensland Group in Durack.
PD Kaos was accompanied by his handler, Senior Constable Jim Griffiths, his family and Officer in Charge of the Brisbane Dog Squad Senior Sergeant Sean Baxendell.
The Outstanding Canine Service Award is the highest honour that can be awarded to a German Shepherd in Australia.
Annie Tamblyn from GSDCA said PD Kaos displayed outstanding service and bravery in the line of duty.
“We are pleased to award Kaos after his seven years of service with the Queensland Police Service,” Annie Tamblyn said.
“He is a dog that was both feared by criminals and loved by children, especially when he would visit them at the Queensland Children’s Hospital.”
On February 2, 2020, PD Kaos was transported to a veterinary surgery where he fought for his life and underwent extensive surgery after receiving a 12-centimetre stab wound to the chest during the apprehension of two men in Gordon Park. He returned to duty, protecting the community a month later after receiving many well wishes and one dog quilt from members of the public.
Senior Constable Griffiths said it was a privilege to accept the award on behalf of Kaos.
“Our police dogs do amazing things every day, so I am honoured Kaos has had the opportunity to be recognised for what he did.”
