Police investigate serious assault at Smithfield

Police are investigating a serious assault and traffic crash that occurred this morning in Smithfield.

Preliminary investigations indicate that at around 9:50am two cars were travelling along Kuranda Range Road and have made contact with each other.

Both drivers have pulled over to the side of the road, where a physical altercation allegedly has occurred.

During the altercation one of the drivers has fallen and hit his head on the roadway, causing serious head injuries.

A 57-year-old man from Speewah was transported to Cairns Hospital and later airlifted to Townsville Hospital in a critical condition.

The second driver a 43-year-old man from Kuranda is assisting police with the investigation.

Police are appealing for anyone with dashcam vision or information to come forward.

Investigations are continuing.
