Prime Minister’s continued support welcome for gamechanging urban renewal plan

Dean Young, Government Whip

The Tasmanian Liberal Government welcomes the Federal Government’s glowing endorsement of our plan to deliver urban renewal at Macquarie Point Precinct.

Describing Macquarie Point as “an important redevelopment site” and “prime land”, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese continues to reject State Labor’s position on the Mac Point precinct opportunity.

Liberal Member for Franklin, Dean Young, said the Labor Opposition continues to be exposed for trying to have it every which way on the Stadium – and Tasmania’s AFL Team.

“Their scare tactics do nothing but undermine confidence in Tasmania,” Mr Young said.

Our plan for the site has the support of the Prime Minister, and our Government has partnered with the Australian Government to unlock the potential of the Macquarie Point Precinct.

In today’s northern newspapers the Prime Minister has further reinforced his ambition for transformative projects such as Mac Point, stating:

“If you look at the projects around Southbank in Melbourne, around Barangaroo, Darling Harbour in Sydney, around the Quay in Perth, these sites are important,” he said.

“And you look at here (the Novotel Devonport), years ago this site didn’t take advantage of the waterfront and the natural beauty here.

“You don’t have to go further than where we’re sitting right now in Devonport to look at the importance of the way a whole city can be lifted up and transformed by a project.”

Mr Young said it is only the Rockliff Liberal Government that has a long-term plan to deliver a strong economy, create jobs and that this is an exciting opportunity for Tasmania.

“Our vision for an arts, cultural and entertainment precinct will be an economic enabler and gamechanger for our whole State,” Mr Young said.

“It will deliver more visitors, more investment, and more jobs to Tasmania.

“Tasmanians will never understand why Tasmanian Labor actively lobbied against a quarter of a billion dollars of new funding for this transformative plan.

“The Albanese Labor Government are on board, it’s time Tasmanian Labor gets on board too.”
