Proposal to preserve heritage shaped by community feedback

Valuable community commentary has been taken on board by Sunshine Coast Council as it progresses the proposed historic cultural heritage planning scheme amendment.

More than 385 submissions received during the public consultation period provided a vital insight into the best ways to protect and manage our local heritage places and character areas across the Sunshine Coast.

Heritage Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski thanked the community for showing such significant interest in the proposed amendment.

“A number of locals shared their thoughts, concerns and ideas about the importance of protecting key heritage places and character areas within our planning scheme,” Cr Baberowski said.

“While council has worked closely with expert historians to prepare the proposed amendment for the listings of local heritage places and character areas – it’s also important to hear what the community has to say about such proposals.

“Based on the submissions received, we now understand that the community did not completely support certain aspects of the proposal as it stood, including the proposed listing of the Sunshine Castle at Bli Bli.

“Community feedback has helped council mould the version before us today, which was the key purpose of the exercise.

“Through consultation activities like this, we can better understand the community’s views and understanding of heritage, and therefore better manage and protect it for future generations.”

Feedback received during the public consultation period has informed a revised version of the proposed amendment, which was endorsed at council’s February Special Meeting (February 20).

The proposed amendment represents a major milestone in heritage and character protection for the Sunshine Coast.

As well as providing ongoing protection for most existing local heritage places and character areas, the proposed amendment has an increased focus on post-World War II and contemporary architecture heritage places.

This is particularly important given that much of the region’s development has occurred within the last 70 years.

The amendment will provide new protection for the Maroochy River Boathouse Jetties and other iconic heritage places across the Sunshine Coast.

The proposed amendment will now be referred to the State Government for final Ministerial review prior to its adoption and commencement in the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014.
