The design for the new Quentin Kenihan inclusive play space in the city has been revealed for the first time, following an extensive community engagement process.
The playspace, located in Rymill Park / Murlawirrapurka (Park 14), will be a fun, exciting and safe environment for children of all abilities to enjoy. Construction is set to begin this month and is expected to finish by December 2020.
It follows a $1 million State Government commitment to the City of Adelaide to build an inclusive playspace to honour the late and much-loved disability advocate Quentin Kenihan.
The play equipment includes a wheelchair trampoline, sound and sensory garden, water play, swings and a carousel. Other features include:
- accessible toilets (including an accredited Changing Places facility)
- accessible paths
- barbeques, shelter and seats
- fully fenced playspace
Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor said she looked forward to families enjoying the new playspace.
“The Quentin Kenihan Inclusive Playspace will be a wonderful addition to our suite of playspaces within the Adelaide Park Lands and will soon become a key attraction for Rymill Park / Murlawirrapurka (Park 14),” said the Lord Mayor.
“Our team has worked closely with Quentin’s family and friends, Council’s Access and Inclusion Panel and key members of the community to design a playspace that Quentin would be proud of, and that will hopefully be warmly embraced by children of all abilities from across Adelaide.
“Through its 2020-24 Strategic Plan, the City of Adelaide is committed to providing a safe, affordable, accessible, well-connected city for people of all ages and abilities.”
Minister for Human Services Michelle Lensink said she looked forward to seeing the new playspace come to fruition.
“The Marshall Liberal Government is thrilled to commit $1 million to such a worthwhile project that will no doubt be enjoyed by children of all ages, abilities and cultures – and their families,” said Minister Lensink.
“Quentin fiercely advocated for an inclusive playground in the CBD so it will be fantastic to see his dream become a reality in the next few months.”
